![]() So I booted up the first Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis just to make sure. Maybe I’m remembering them being much better than they actually were. For example, even with all of their questionable design decisions, the Sonic Adventure games are fun enough that I would classify them as “good.”īut even feeling sure of this, I was beginning to question if, just maybe, my memory of the first Sonic games is blurry. Maybe we’ve all been so soured by awful experiences such as Sonic ’06 and Sonic Unleashed that we want to bury all the positive memories of Sonic away, but this is a terrible thing to do. Sure, there are some really bad Sonic games, but there’s also a LOT of excellent games. I just don’t see how it makes any sense at all to say Sonic Mania succeeds where the classic games didn’t, because Mania lifts a lot from the classics, and that is a good thing. Sonic Mania lifts many stages from the classic Sonic games, and remixes them. Sonic Mania is good because the original trilogy was good. So color me surprised when I find that Sonic Mania is easily the best Sonic game since the original trilogy!īut Sonic Mania isn’t good because the developers are somehow giving us a rose tinted view of what we think the games were like. I knew about the game prior to its release, and couldn’t care less about it. It’s by far the biggest surprise of this year. Like many other people, I’ve been playing–and enjoying the hell out of– Sonic Mania. So, is it some elaborate joke, or is it that these people have never played any of the games from Sonic‘s golden age on the Sega consoles? It’s almost like a meme at this point, one I’m kinda getting sick of. ![]() “ Sonic Mania is the first good Sonic game,” it says. I was reading through game-related news and articles as I often do, and I came across this Business Insider piece.
